Polymer Clay Penguin Tutorial

For several years I've been making this cute little penguin on an ice cube. My design was published about 4 years ago in a craft magazine. I thought it would be fun to make a tutorial for it.

I used to get the ice cubes at a dollar store right around the corner. I haven't been able to find them there for awhile, but sometimes I luck out and get them at Michaels or Joanns. I haven't tried Hobby Lobby yet. Please let me know if there is anything unclear on the tutorial. I'm still trying to get the knack of movie maker! Thanks for stopping by. I'm slowly recuperating and anxious to blog more often. It's been a rough month, but I survived!

They have them at crafts 2000 in Monroe for a 1.00 or a little more. They are by the wedding stuff.

My 7 yr old son loves penguins, I will have to try these.
I stumbled across this blog after googling "polymer clay monkey" trying to find directions on how to sculpt a monkey. You have some very cute things (monkeys included, and I love the cupcake bracelet I saw, too.)
Anyway, I have never worked with clay and was wondering if I could ask a couple questions?

Do you need to use pins or toothpicks to hold on the arms and legs? (I have some cute leaf ribbon and want to make the monkey an ornament hanging from it. Like it's a loop of vine) with one arm over its head.

My oven seems to heat up higher than it's set so I have to lower the temp to not burn things...How can you tell if the clay is thoroughly baked?

The one book my local craft store had was not very informative to me, any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Lisa
